In a podcast with Joe Rogan, renowned mycologist, author, and advocate of bioremediation and medicinal fungi Paul Stamets explains why mushrooms should not be underestimated. According to him, mushrooms are among the healthiest substances in the world.
Mushrooms: Sentient, Crucial for Biodiversity
Stamets considers fungi as the “smartest brain in the world.” This is because 30% of what makes the soil is made up of fungal mass living in the dead healthy soil. This makes fungi the biggest repository of carbon in the ground. Because of this, fungi are essential for the preservation of biodiversity in the ecosystem.
The author also believes that mushrooms are sentient, meaning they have the ability to feel or perceive things. According to him, man descended from fungi, with the former separating from the latter 650 million years ago. We share more common ancestors with fungi than any other species. Plus, fungi are much closer to animals than to plants since animals came from fungi.
Psilocybin: A Prehistoric Psychedelic Prodrug
One of the most potent mushrooms out there is psilocybin. According to Stamets, psilocybin should be considered as a nootropic vitamin because of the many health benefits it can offer. For those who didn’t know, psilocybin is a psychedelic prodrug compound found naturally in more than 200 species of mushroom. Prehistoric murals and rock paintings found in certain parts of the world suggest that our ancestors had been using psilocybin mushrooms for hundreds of years.
Various research and studies show that psilocybin mushrooms offer numerous health benefits, particularly those that affect the brain. For instance, a study conducted by the University of South Florida in 2013 revealed that these mushrooms promote the growth of new brain cells. The research team found that, when tested on mice, psilocybin can help improve memory, learning, and fear extinction.
Mental Health Benefits
Psilocybin mushrooms have also been found to be helpful to those who are suffering from certain mental conditions. According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona in 2006, these mushrooms can help alleviate the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD. It can also help relieve anxiety, especially among patients with advanced stages of cancer, as well as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.
Apart from psilocybin mushrooms, another type of mushroom that is good for the health is lion’s mane mushroom, which has been found to have the potential to help treat Alzheimer’s disease. Stamets himself admits to taking lion’s mane every day for its brain-boosting benefits. He believes that stacking lion’s mane with psilocybin and niacin should be legal to enhance brain health and function.
